The official site for the 2012 Olympics calls “Track and Field” = “Athletics,” so that’s what I will go with.
This is a bit of a biased choice. My family grew up with the Felix family. Allyson’s brother, Wes, was one of my best friends in elementary school. I can say without a doubt, that he is the most athletically gifted person I’ve ever been around. I mean it was silly… he dunked a tennis ball in the 5th grade! He too was a track star, and won the 200m for USC at the Pac-10 Championships (now Pac-12 i guess). They have an incredibly godly family and I wish them all the best… and I remember Mrs. Felix making incredible Enchiladas.
Allyson is faster than you.
Allyson is a 3-time World Champion and 2-time Olympic Silver medalist in the 200m. She won a gold in Beijing in the 4×400 team relay but is going for her first individual Gold medal. Allyson also runs the 100m and 400m, and will decide soon what event she will compete in at the games. She’s become the poster girl for US Track and Field and Nike… and deservedly so.
A bit about her background (copied and pasted): “Felix, born and raised in Southern California, is a devout Christian and is the daughter of Paul, an ordained minister and professor of New Testament at The Master’s Seminary in Sun Valley, California [Grace Community Church], and Marlean who is an elementary school teacher at Balboa Magnet Elementary. Her older brother, Wes Felix is also a sprinter, and was the Pac 10 200m champion in 2003 and 2004. Wes now acts as the agent for his sister. Felix sees her running ability as a gift from God, “My faith is the reason I run – it calms my heart and makes everything feel like a lift. My speed is definitely a gift from Him, and I run for His glory. Whatever I do, He allows me to do it.”"
Stay tuned… next up, BADMINTON!!!
